Cyanide and Acid Wastewater Evaporator Systems

Cyanide and Acid Wastewater Evaporator Systems

Overview

Burt Process Equipment designed and delivered two high-performance wastewater evaporator systems — one for cyanide-containing wastewater and one for acid-containing wastewater — for a global manufacturing facility. Additionally, Burt Process upgraded an existing evaporator system at the same site. These systems were engineered to handle aggressive chemical waste streams, ensuring operational safety, environmental compliance, and reduced wastewater disposal costs.

Customer Profile

The customer, a global technology and manufacturing leader, required robust evaporator systems capable of treating hazardous cyanide and acidic effluents. The systems needed to integrate into the existing plant infrastructure, accommodate high corrosion resistance, and include advanced monitoring and control capabilities.

Challenge

The facility needed to replace and expand its wastewater treatment capacity to address increased production and tighter discharge standards. The treatment systems had to handle highly corrosive wastewater streams, operate safely and reliably, and fit within the plant’s operational and spatial constraints. Upgrading one existing unit alongside delivering two new systems posed additional coordination challenges.

Solution:

Burt Process Equipment delivered a new cyanide evaporator, a new acid evaporator, and upgrades to an existing acid evaporator, each designed for aggressive service. Key system elements included:

Cyanide Evaporator:

  • Polypropylene tower with saddle packing, mist eliminator, 1200 CFM blower, and spray-down system.
  • 500-gallon recirculation tank (PP) with secondary containment tank.
  • Titanium heating coils (hot water-fed), CPVC recirculation pump, float level control, AOD fill pump, and NEMA 4 UL-listed control panel with Siemens PLC and temperature control.
  • System tested and delivered with full engineering submittals and AutoCAD documentation.

Acid Evaporator:

  • Polypropylene tower and recirculation tank, secondary containment, CPVC pump, and titanium heating coils.
  • Upgraded float level controls, two PTFE-coated RTD sensors, and hot water solenoid valve assembly.
  • NEMA 4 UL-listed control panel with interlocks and safety alarms.

Existing Evaporator Upgrade:

  • Added PVDF float level switches and two PTFE-coated RTDs, installed and wired to the existing system.

Each system was fully pre-assembled and factory-tested before shipment. Burt Process also offered optional spare titanium coils and provided one day of on-site startup and training per unit for proper commissioning.

Key System Components

  • Polypropylene evaporator towers with mist eliminators and washdown
  • 500-gallon PP recirculation tanks with secondary containment
  • Titanium heating coils with hot water control
  • CPVC recirculation pumps and AOD fill pumps
  • NEMA 4 UL-listed control panels with Siemens PLCs and interlocks
  • Full engineering package: P&ID, electrical schematics, BOMs, operating manuals

Outcome

The two new evaporator systems and the upgraded unit provided the customer with:

  • Increased treatment capacity for hazardous cyanide and acid wastewater streams.
  • Reduced disposal volumes through effective water evaporation.
  • Safer operation with upgraded controls, alarms, and secondary containment.
  • Compliance with stringent environmental standards.
  • Improved reliability and maintainability through modernized components and documentation.

Conclusion

Burt Process Equipment delivered a tailored solution combining new and upgraded evaporator systems to meet the customer’s hazardous wastewater treatment challenges. The systems’ robust construction, advanced controls, and modular design provided long-term reliability, enhanced safety, and operational efficiency — ensuring compliance and supporting the customer’s sustainability goals.
